Does he want to scoop up precious resources for himself, or use them as a way to appease the sun and end the suffering of the system? Or Maybe they’re just shiny pick-ups in a video game to him. You play as a scavenger, a rogue from outside the Extax System who seems to have only one goal: get Atomiks. Each denizen has their own theory on why the sun seems so enraged, but they all hang on one central element: Atomiks, the primary resource in the entire system. With most of the planets already devoured, the remaining worlds have descended into madness and superstition. The game takes place in the Extax System, a solar system where the Sun has begun to swell and devour planets. There is only running, gunning, jumping, and gunning, in a mad dash to survive long enough to die again. Players will have to constantly alternate between the two firing modes to maneuver through meticulously crafted levels where death is a promise not a possibility. But there is no stopping in this beautifully surreal world littered with deadly traps and soul-crushing obstacles around every corner. The other shoots forward, destroying anything that’s in your path. One button shoots your massive gun downwards, propelling you through the air. The two-button setup is treacherously simple. With a cast of crazed characters, simple but beautifully difficult gameplay, and a pulsing musical score, Atomik is a loud, trippy mess of twitchy platforming goodness. The level design is excellent throughout though, and once you get a feel for the game’s physics it becomes a little easier to avoid the many, many deadly objects in your proximity.Atomik: RunGunJumpGun is a tough as nails 2D Action Platformer that puts a teeth-rattling, gravity-defying weapon in your hands. That’s if you succeed on your first attempt, though, which is highly unlikely – these stages are tough. Don’t let the simple touchscreen controls fool you: this is a hardcore action platformer requiring quick wits and perseverance. The 120+ levels are a quick-fire affair, punctuated by one-line cutscenes and each lasting just 20 seconds or so. Congratulations! You’ve just imagined this game. The tap-to-hover mechanic is a familiar iOS staple, but it works well: think Flappy Bird if it was even harder and the bird had a massive gun. It’s a fast-paced platformer that throws you in at the deep end, with barrages of fireballs and circular saws setting the tone early on. You can either RunGun or JumpGun at any given moment, and the game constantly asks you to weigh up the two priorities: aggression or evasion? Only by balancing the two actions can you complete each level, and that’s much easier said than done. The genius – and the challenge – is in the fact that you can’t do the two at once. Shooting downwards in bursts allows you to essentially fly through each level
